I’ve always felt that my songs and my stories came from the same emotional place. That said, my music was much more about pure self-expression, and when I began to write fiction, the biggest challenge was facing all these questions about narrative and plot and character. You can get away with being much more abstract in a song.</a></p></blockquote>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-60119493279576171452024-03-08T06:32:00.000+11:002024-03-08T06:32:02.840+11:00How people think mastering works<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYQVCw-MGBm8s-d1yO6mZlD9ryQLYCxVmravkoLHFtfGhhg_qN4Uv1LIzK91cV9ab0ijYgUS4WAjjYOwGh3d1QVEwqAJnRITTeUQmi_3ab6jLf52N4mBPd-hQAxhu9BR7qxnApYudU3-BFwUdlp1W5ZIe8cWarRCicO7u2NFGrnAYuxDZSsO4w/s612/mastering.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="597" data-original-width="612" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYQVCw-MGBm8s-d1yO6mZlD9ryQLYCxVmravkoLHFtfGhhg_qN4Uv1LIzK91cV9ab0ijYgUS4WAjjYOwGh3d1QVEwqAJnRITTeUQmi_3ab6jLf52N4mBPd-hQAxhu9BR7qxnApYudU3-BFwUdlp1W5ZIe8cWarRCicO7u2NFGrnAYuxDZSsO4w/s320/mastering.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-86338286211353453562024-03-07T20:52:00.014+11:002024-03-15T04:41:51.333+11:00Disquiet Junto 0636 Left (1 of 3)<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="236" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2mR8Y6P6ulo?si=sBNtBmCyQoVYNTNa" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe>

<p>The Disquiet Junto project this week is to imagine your bandmate is a train.</p><p>For various reasons I decided to use my own recording of a passing diesel locomotive. </p><p>This recording was made at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVL_ObzijcM">Ramponi Park</a> about a dozen years ago. <br /></p><p>Ableton Live decided the tempo was around 122 BPM and I wanted a nostalgic sorta vibe.</p><p>Originally the chords were played with Live's vibraphone instrument, as I saw a performance last weekend that used this instrument.</p><p>Then, as I decided on the vibe (no pun intended), I swapped it for M-Tron Pro and also used that VST for the melody.<br /></p>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-49235649140836895142024-02-25T06:02:00.005+11:002024-02-25T06:02:44.735+11:00Old Macdonald had a theremin<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I set up my camera and used the built-in mic, recording from the kitchen sink into the dodgy extension on the house where the drum kit seems to sound great (maybe it's the low ceiling?). </p><p> I've been enjoying hearing Schubert's waltzes, so I found one on Youtube and kept everything muffled with the window closed while I beat the drums hard.</p>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-90880622410471383792024-02-18T07:26:00.005+11:002024-02-18T07:30:56.700+11:00Learn to identify<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtcR2qWHvBlF_aaQe9r-RFniBQfcnpFLr81Jg6hoPiRazzismAbzJPVQ8Nl5x-UBo_plvzRTKoqHUfhW_5X8ElmRPw2towwar4UtO38rClgZRfnsUFyy9IYuVqij3qF5wtrJcFk1VPvnfKI5pYP8lKVxnCVrSNEzUMjL7ACPi4zfhYfEfz9-wL/s526/learn%20to%20identify.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="525" data-original-width="526" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtcR2qWHvBlF_aaQe9r-RFniBQfcnpFLr81Jg6hoPiRazzismAbzJPVQ8Nl5x-UBo_plvzRTKoqHUfhW_5X8ElmRPw2towwar4UtO38rClgZRfnsUFyy9IYuVqij3qF5wtrJcFk1VPvnfKI5pYP8lKVxnCVrSNEzUMjL7ACPi4zfhYfEfz9-wL/s320/learn%20to%20identify.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-12544094921126747822024-02-17T19:30:00.007+11:002024-02-18T07:29:39.650+11:00naviarhaiku528 – What’s a month for the sea<p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="236" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ixcTIgeSVi8?si=PTmNXro389cMRx3u" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLyDzzICalXQEyprY3n6Kq0Jhq5SSrI8PbtnAsQEf4EPJZW-5fCOGChpO_HlrkwqrLvCzJcw-StDmtmoi3nDgSZ-i9mRCiSD8pIBZKU25FUrdk9DB1OS6qeZi-YBFIWJODKuueZeDjHoaKuizSDdbwmbkueouOlOJdLedXPDqGdq3rVxuQoXgs/s720/naviarhaiku528%20%E2%80%93%20What%E2%80%99s%20a%20month%20for%20the%20sea.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="720" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLyDzzICalXQEyprY3n6Kq0Jhq5SSrI8PbtnAsQEf4EPJZW-5fCOGChpO_HlrkwqrLvCzJcw-StDmtmoi3nDgSZ-i9mRCiSD8pIBZKU25FUrdk9DB1OS6qeZi-YBFIWJODKuueZeDjHoaKuizSDdbwmbkueouOlOJdLedXPDqGdq3rVxuQoXgs/w200-h148/naviarhaiku528%20%E2%80%93%20What%E2%80%99s%20a%20month%20for%20the%20sea.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>The haiku shared by Naviar Records this week had me looking for a frosty synth sound.<p></p><p>I'd already programmed a few ideas and then set about helping them to work with each other. <br /></p><p> </p>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-77666991218305538042024-02-16T07:25:00.001+11:002024-02-18T07:26:01.135+11:00Teletubbies<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRJW-SxdMbVtLkG7daKHi8Z6lLoHvrsIlFjoLF719vCu9JtHkjbiztt-oZgChGWmpNGvUmxfAgsdieeagmjcWksuVVeK9wzh8dDNPQQO8g-mxcFWFhYjX9d1DPXsdDF6dw5UF3nr1g1LU_09h9DU_NsteG_c8xjWEAi_8dekrIjYNPgjicn2VN/s640/teletubbies.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: right; float: right;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRJW-SxdMbVtLkG7daKHi8Z6lLoHvrsIlFjoLF719vCu9JtHkjbiztt-oZgChGWmpNGvUmxfAgsdieeagmjcWksuVVeK9wzh8dDNPQQO8g-mxcFWFhYjX9d1DPXsdDF6dw5UF3nr1g1LU_09h9DU_NsteG_c8xjWEAi_8dekrIjYNPgjicn2VN/s320/teletubbies.jpg"/></a></div>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-729290363783253222024-02-15T19:34:00.020+11:002024-02-15T19:40:17.610+11:00Disquiet Junto 0633 Voice Swap<iframe width="420" height="236" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pdzqFMZ_EPc?si=S0fg2dsXfyUT_MSL" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<p>A funny thing happened along the way to finishing this track. </p><p>I set out yesterday to record sheer wind noise. </p><p>It's something I rarely do and the result seemed underwhelming. </p><p>The microphone mightn't have been plugged in, but the noise was more mechanical most of the time and the wind noise was mostly insignificant. </p><p>So I gated the peaks and used Live to set the BPM and make a drum part from the field recording. </p><p>Along the way I made a different track with a field recording that totally lacked shear wind noise and began wondering if this track was, well, off track for the Junto. </p><p>Then I went back and re-read the Disquiet instruction and realised I had followed the purpose, particularly this bit:
"a noise you didn’t notice until you listened back, or a malfunction in the recording equipment." </p><p>The grunting bike noise propels one track in a pack of rhythms and, while it's not wind shear, I followed the direction to make music with the resulting recording.</p>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13567502.post-55839685060711621662024-02-10T23:25:00.001+11:002024-02-11T14:26:07.073+11:00Making music on a computer<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg42VNnMvCCIaEK5rCYcxd_LZI1WCua64612eTGzWbMbVflFJcRIKe-BWXYTwa8sXSzlyJK5pPPfuvyhJge1nBGxbQR4rlPtdifok9BPsPhaDvqlg38fi3mTmuVZK2NLHAXtuo6yHLlt23LaPil20NgjZykzI9-s9d8XcR_BPe5V1evBA3-cHv9/s600/making%20music.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="474" data-original-width="600" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg42VNnMvCCIaEK5rCYcxd_LZI1WCua64612eTGzWbMbVflFJcRIKe-BWXYTwa8sXSzlyJK5pPPfuvyhJge1nBGxbQR4rlPtdifok9BPsPhaDvqlg38fi3mTmuVZK2NLHAXtuo6yHLlt23LaPil20NgjZykzI9-s9d8XcR_BPe5V1evBA3-cHv9/s320/making%20music.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Jason Richardsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07946572079295813973noreply@blogger.com
